GAVRA RABA is a contemporary remix of a Talmudic story, or midrash, through a variety of media and over an extended process.

THE STORY The Talmud tells (tractate Baba Metziaa, page peh-daled) of an arch criminal — Reish Lakish — who comes across Rabbi Yohanan bathing in the Jordan river one day. Read what happens next here.

FOR this show at Yafo Creative I was riffing on the underlying sense of a troubled mythology present in the original Gavra Raba story. The images that appeared in these collages are the stuff of dreams.

 I work in collage and paper based drawing and painting primarily. Nature to me is where everything comes together, whether it’s landscape painting, mythological collage and painting (mythology always looks at the natural world), or practicing and teaching art and meditation. I live in Kibbutz Hannaton with my wife and 3 kids

A SEARCH for new Old-Masters, a curiosity toward the civilizations of my county’s enemies — real, imagined, and painstakingly sustained — led to a beautiful revelation of the block as an underpinning of both 17th century Islamic and 20th century abstract compositions.
