GAVRA RABA is a contemporary remix of a Talmudic story, or midrash, through a variety of media and over an extended process.

THE STORY The Talmud tells (tractate Baba Metziaa, page peh-daled) of an arch criminal — Reish Lakish — who comes across Rabbi Yohanan bathing in the Jordan river one day. Read what happens next here.

THE DRAWING an extended charcoal and graphite imagined-figure drawing (no models), 2018 to 2019

OTHER PIECES include a small collage and a lino-cut print, exploring the themes of the midrash.

FOR this show at Yafo Creative I was riffing on the underlying sense of a troubled mythology present in the original Gavra Raba story. The images that appeared in these collages are the stuff of dreams.

bio

I AM an Israeli artist trained in observation-based oil painting. My latest work includes collages and a video piece, in which I worked with narrative in a way that was new to me. This country is tensely conflicted both internally and externally, and I think my role is to somehow transmute that tension into an aesthetic experience. Originally a Yerushalmi I now live with my family on Kibutz Hanaton, a rural settlement in the north of Israel, in the culturally diverse and historically saturated Galil.

A SEARCH for new Old-Masters, a curiosity toward the civilizations of my county’s enemies — real, imagined, and painstakingly sustained — led to a beautiful revelation of the block as an underpinning of both 17th century Islamic and 20th century abstract compositions.
